17 Border Crossings

Imaginary lines, real consequences, true border crossings.

The history of passports, smuggling Kentucky Fried Chicken into other countries and the peculiarities of airline security — it’s all covered in this miraculous, one-man saga that unpacks how the mundane details that govern global travel become the actual journey.

17 Border Crossings is a surreal sojourn that transports us to very real places: Hungary, Serbia, Morocco, Colombia, Holland and Mexico, to name a few. In the deft, mischievous manner of the trickster, Phillips manages to float huge questions that surround the fraught migrations of our era.

With all the childlike curiosity and adult skepticism of monologist Spalding Gray, and the theatrical wizardry of a Robert Lepage, Thaddeus Phillips takes audiences by the hand on a trip around the world and shows us that when we cross the imaginary lines that divide up the world, the real borders come to light.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

On March 30, 1958, Alvin Ailey led a group of young African-American modern dancers in a now-fabled performance at the 92nd Street Y in New York City that forever changed the perception of American dance. And in 1968, Celebrity Series of Boston first presented the Ailey company in what has become an annual tradition and celebration.

“…So far under Mr. Battle’s direction it has been smooth sailing for the Ailey company…” —THE NEW YORK TIMES

“…Mr. Battle has made a point to expand the company’s repertory…”
— THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

“Be prepared for 2 things: a continued devotion to tradition, but also big, refreshing surprises.” — THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE

Program, prices and sections are subject to change.

The Dance Series is sponsored by the Stephanie L. Brown Foundation, the Royal Little Family Foundation and the Cynthia and John S. Reed Foundation.
